Provide high quality, substantive advice, and inputs in order to support the launch of Greening the ICT industry by 2050: Continuously monitor climate progress and commitments via an online event during the World Telecommunication Development Conference and the development of communication materials around World Environment Day 2022.This chapter will include implications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic (the shift to video conferencing and the environmental footprint of such) and provide examples of how companies are greening their supply chain. An overview of how ICTs/digital technologies can reduce emissions in other industries and what companies are doing about it.The chapter will reflect on the variability in accounting practices and the implications of such for climate change/environmental targets, and what alternatives are available for ICT industry. Providing an overview of carbon reducing practices and environmental accounting reporting carried out by the 150 companies.Summarizing and comparing how companies based in low- and middle-income countries perform in terms of their environmental commitments, identifying gaps in energy policy, environmental reporting, and regulation.The consultant will be supporting the drafting of the following three chapters: This will include providing an overview of what 150 leading ICT companies are doing to reduce their environmental footprint by analyzing publicly available data from company websites/reports. Support the research and drafting of a paper on 'Greening the ICT industry by 2050: Monitoring climate progress and commitments' which is due to be published in June 2022. The paper will describe and benchmark industry efforts and provide guidance and recommendations to the ICT industry on how to collect data and which indicators to focus on, with the objective of guiding and incentivizing other ICT companies to do the same. Many ICT companies are making a commitment to reduce emissions and collect and publish environmental data, including data on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and the share of renewables in energy use. In particular he/she will perform desk-based research on and contribute to a paper about environmental commitments that the ICT/telecommunications industry is making to reduce their environmental footprint. The consultant will work on the topic of digital transformation and climate change. This will include the preparation of a joint ITU and World Benchmark Alliance (WBA) paper, and preliminary research on green government technologies. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) seeks to engage a climate change technology consultant to support the ITU's work on sustainable digital transformation and the greening of the ICT industry. This department is also responsible for supporting ITU Member States in their transition to digital societies by providing tools and guidelines to address environmental challenges (in particular, climate change and e-waste), and for promoting innovation, ICT applications/services, digital inclusion, and ecosystems, with the ultimate goal to 'leave no one behind'. The Digital Networks & Society Department is responsible for BDT activities in the areas of spectrum management, network development, cybersecurity, and emergency telecommunications.
